Day 14 Run It Fast Race Across the USA Map

Day 14: Run It Fast’s Race Across the USA – Rev Run’s Record Setting Win

Rev Run blistered 2,907 miles over the course of 13 days, 20 hours, 17 minutes to win Run It Fast’s Race Across the USA. The great Lisa Devona ran her team onto the Santa Monica Pier in California in reaching the Pacific Ocean. The entire team was waiting and holding a ‘2,907 Miles – Sub-14 Days’ banner that Lisa tore through. It was fitting considering her phenomenal 500-mile performance over the past two weeks.

The powerhouse led by team captain David Pharr had daily contributions from every runner. A team of superstars that lifted up and inspired each other from #1 o- # 11 on their daily scorecard.

We all remember where we were when Michael Jordan hit ‘The Shot,’ and we all will always remember the hour and minute that this team finished the most perfect race in U.S.A. running history.

On a day of national upheaval, Rev Run finished on the Santa Monica Pier less than 45 minutes before the 6pm curfew city officials had put in place just a hour before.

The 11-person team averaged 207.64 miles per day, a daily average of 18.88 miles/per runner.

It took a Herculean effort to finish before the weekend cascaded as the team needed 536.70 miles coming into the weekend to make it happen. True to their mutant ethos they ran 292.46 miles yesterday (average of 26.79/runner), to leave a measly chip shot of 244.24 miles from the Mojave Desert to finish today. And they did it, rather easily, with almost four hours to spare.

They were led on the final day by Ed ‘the Jester Ettinghausen’s 100K mic drop, and Lisa’s 50-mile exclamation point giving her 500.78 miles for the race. And in what would have easily led many other teams today, Rev had big miles from Sherry Meador’s 34.11, Karl Studtmann’s 32.19, and Emily Ryan’s 32.08.

Rev Run finished today with our second place team 700 miles behind in Arizona.

“I think the Suzys were a perfect storm of talent and opportunity. If you were the have that same event every year, I think that is the kind of record that would stand for a very long time.

Result of random selection, though I doubt there could have been a much stronger team if chosen on purpose. It was fun to watch. Like one of those rare sports team that is just better than everyone else. You just have to sit back and applaud.” – Karl Studtmann (May 3, 2020)

Twenty-eight days later, Rev Run, including Karl, randomly drawn together for The Return Voyage, beat the Suzy Michelson Team’s time of 14 days, 21 hours, 10 min, from the inaugural Run It Fast’ Race Across the USA, by a full day and 53 minutes – with four less runners on our teams for the return trip. It would seem highly improbable now that Rev’s time of 13 days, 20 hours, 17 min will ever be challenged but only time will tell.

The Day’s Quick Team-by-Team Recaps

REV RUN- Day 13: 292.46 Miles (1st) – 1st overall

How does a team of 11 knock on the door of 300? Well, the answer is below from 1 to 11. On a team of Ace’s the biggest one today was Rene Holcomb with 26.20 miles. Rene, who has inspired many on both treks across the country, had her biggest mileage day of either race. She was magnificent, as was every single member on this team today, and throughout the entire race.

Rev crossed the California border and is currently in the Mojave Desert on I-40.

There is a good chance they finish this thing by sunset tomorrow on the Santa Monica Pier. Only 244.24 miles to go!!

RR’s Top Performers of the Day

  1. Lisa Devona – 50.15 miles
  2. David Pharr – 40.42 miles

An amazing performance from The Mets today getting 20+ miles from seven different runners. A strong supporting cast helped the Randy-Andy-Randy Show choreographed by Jen Metcalf to an amazing 236.27 miles. A huge bounce-back from yesterday’s stinker.

The team is currently in Dahlia, New Mexico.

  2. Erik Pascual – 37.56 miles

CROWE BARS – Day 13: 241.46 Miles (2nd) – 3rd overall

Cathy Downes had the hot hand again for the Crowes with 47.41 miles. But the real story of the day was the massive output from Jimmy Girten with 26.30 miles and Tanner Lee’s 25.48. Consistent as can be, Steve Troxel and Marj Mitchell combined for 65.89 miles.

The team is currently in Amarillo, Texas.

CB’s Top Performers of the Day

The team is currently Amarillo, Texas.

TNS’s Top Performers of the Day.

Day 12 Run It Fast Race Across the USA Map

Day 12: Run It Fast’s Race Across the USA – FFWD Run

Run It Fast’s Race Across the USA usually has a bit of a lull every Friday before big massive weekends from the teams, but today was the exception to that rule. Rev ‘FFWD’ Run had it’s second biggest day of the entire event with 248.82 miles, just five miles off it’s high of 253.18 on May 23rd.

The biggest bump on the day went to Mojo Rising with 163.68 miles. They had the third most miles on the day, a spot behind The Metcalvary’s 167.49.

The Grapes of Rath and Tuck n’ Stroll rounded out the top five teams on Day 12.

The biggest performance of the day, once again, went to Ed ‘the Jester’ Ettinghausen with 51.30 miles. It’s like he’s in a massive hurry to get his team back to his native California and himself, hopefully, to Death Valley in early July for his 10th consecutive Badwater 135.

One would seem to be able to predict the mileage for the Yo-Yo’s tomorrow, but predictions are easy to make with no money on the line.

The team is currently in Biscoe, Arkansas

KICKING GLASS – Day 10: 141.37 Miles (2nd) – 9th overall

What a wonderful day for The Glass. They were 2nd place on the day beating everyone but Rev Run. It came from strong performances by Lisa Van Wolde (25.12 miles), Tiffani Glass (20.24), and Joan Lamayo-Buse (14.52). The Chiu brothers, Brendan and Justin, combined for 22.67 miles which really helped KG knock on Reverend’s door.

Team morale is down for  P-1 with the race ending injury to it’s big miler Thomas Fowler. Captain Rich Peers continues to lead by example, but he might need to dig deep for a Knute Rockne speech to amp up the rest of the team to help make up Fowler’s missing miles. The team is in Germantown, Tennessee.

  2. Melissa Price – 15.08 miles
  3. John Leighton – 10.73 miles

THE BEETROOTS – Day 10: 69.76 Miles (11th) – 12th overall

The Beetroots get a race report today. The good news is Brenda Cross (22.01), Lance McDermott (20.13), and Leslie Studtmann (13.10) contributed wonderfully for The Roots today. The bad news is those three made up 55.24 of the team’s 69.76 miles. As in the other eight members of the team contributed 14.52 miles total. Is this the same team that had 145.86 miles this past Sunday?

The team is in Brownsville, Tennessee being chased by a swarm of killer hornet bees.

BR’s Top Performers of the Day

  1. Brenda Cross – 22.01 miles

The Day’s Quick Team-by-Team Recaps

REV RUN- Day 7: 195.89 Miles (1st) – 1st overall

Ed Ettinghausen led Rev Run and the entire race in miles on Sunday with 42.41 miles. Ho-hum work for The Jester who has finished more 100 mile races than an ear of corn has kernels. He shows up every day and humbly does his massive amount of miles while encouraging his teammates just as relentlessly. He got a couple of big performances on Sunday from Steve Snyder with 29.30 miles and Sherry Meador with 27.15 miles.

The team is running away with this competition. They are currently on the Arkansas/Oklahoma border.

Big hair, ‘Big Sexy,’ big inspiration Jen Metcalf led the way for her team today with 34.00 miles. She had her steady studs Andy Glaze 28.08 miles and Randy Broadway 23.02 miles help The Mets finish 3rd on the day and increase their 2nd place lead on the rest of the field. CROWE BARS – Day 7: 135.67 Miles (6th) – 3rd overall

The Bars overall had a bit of a dip today, but it wasn’t the fault of Steve ’50K’ Troxel and his 31.08 miles. You also can’t fault Jimmy ‘Jam’ Girten who had by far his most impressive day of the race with 21.59 miles. The queen of Pinson Mounds, Marj Mitchell was magnificent with 21.46 miles.

TRIP 2 MY LOU – Day 7: 160.21 Miles (4th) – 5th overall

Team captain Marylou Corino has different teammates who step every day to assist her, but she is the steady constant who delivers massive miles every day. It’s rubbed off on her team as they continue to make strides towards the top of the leader-board. Mare’s 29.00 miles were followed by Amy Cummings with 21.54, and Laura Eriks with 18.00.

Never a real bad day in this race, just some days you get to soak in God’s creation a bit more on the road, and what better day than a Sunday stroll through Tennessee. No big miles for anyone today, but Yvette Campos led the team for the second day in a row with 13.17 miles, following 31.13 yesterday. Megan Maiser added 11.54, and Stacy King hit double digits with 11.

The team is nearing Cookeville, Tennessee, home of the legendary Dallas Smith.

He added a couple more miles to total 24.84 miles on the day. I believe it’s Ed’s most miles he’s ever had in a day. An impressive feat, but more importantly, an impressive dedication to Dave.  Dave is missed by many.

Run It Fast’s Extreme Racer Standings (Thru May 2015)

George Southgate photo by Tim Rogan - Run It Fast

Since I am sitting here following the Western States Endurance Run 100 progress (where several RIF members, including RIF #1 and founder Joshua Holmes, are laying down the miles and getting close to the finish line), now is as good of a time as any to tally up the Extreme Racer points for the year through May.

Last year’s winner has joined the pack this month and entered his miles for the year. However, I am surprised to see that he is not in first place so far. Leading the way is RIF #279 George Southgate with 768.6 points. Second place is held by RIF #190 John Kent Leighton with 744.15 points. Last year’s winner, RIF #121 Ed Ettinghausen takes third place with 704.02 points.

RIF #159 Diane Bolton is in first for the women with 395.6 points. Following very close behind is RIF #450 Patricia Klein with 394.4 points. Third place is held by RIF #358 Belinda Young with 393.1 points. With a 2.5 point difference between first and third place, one race could completely rearrange the order of placings here for next month.

June has been a busy month for Run It Fast members, especially with Run It Fast’s own Jackal Marathon series, which ran for 5 consecutive days during the third week in June, so I’m sure these numbers will increase dramatically and placings will change all over the board. As always, Run It Fast members continue to inspire and amaze by pushing their boundaries and testing their limits. I look forward to seeing what the rest of the year holds for this incredible group of determined runners.

[Extreme Racer points are rewarded per each racing mile completed. Example: marathon = 26.2 points, half marathon 13.1 points, etc.]
