Patrick Makau Smashes World Record at 38th Berlin Marathon

11:04am – RECORD  NEW WORLD MARATHON RECORD for PATRICK MAKAU IN 2:03:37

11:00am – 18 seconds ahead of the pace with about 1 km to go.

10:58am – 1:57:15 at 40km for Patrick Makau (2:03:40). Less than 6 minutes til we know…

10:57am – Florence Kiplagat at 1:56:10 at the 35km mark.

10:56am – Approaching 40km for Patrick Makau. 2:03:20 projected finishing time. 39 seconds ahead of the WR pace that Haile holds.

10:53am – 10 minutes until we have a new record. Will it fall? I’ll let you know in 10 min.

10:43am – Makau is trying to repeat…he won Berlin last year.

10:36am – 51 seconds ahead of WR at 33km

10:33am – 49 seconds ahead of the world record pace at 32km for Makau.

10:30am – Patrick Makau is at the 30km mark in 1:27:38. 2:03:02 predicted finishing time which would be a new world record. 12km to go.

10:26am – Florence reached 25km in 1:23:15. Paula Radcliffe is back by a large margin now.

10:26am – Makau has a sizable lead now.

10:25am – Haile is back on the course but is over a minute back.  Never underestimate the heart of this champion, but it is looking like he will have no chance to win today.

10:24am – Haile Gebrselassie is DONE! DNF FOR HAILE – He was so strong but has stepped off the course and is done.

10:23am – Haile and Makau are starting to posture each other as the gaming is in full effect now.

10:21am – The pacemakers are falling as the leading men will have to fight it out over the last 15km to see who will win today.

10:19am – Haile Gebrselassie is showing some signs of fatigue. I’d still never bet against him. Never underestimate the heart of a champion and the world record holder.

10:16am – Patrick Makau has taken over the lead (albeit a short one) at the 25km split.  Still tightly bound near the top for the men.

10:13am – 19 seconds back is Paula from Florence at the halfway point for the women.  Florence continues to run strong (and fast). There might be something wrong with Paula who often has injuries pop up from time to time in between her greatness.

10:09am – Paula has lost 8 more seconds to Florence at the 2okm mark and is now 17 seconds back. Flo hit 20km in 1:06:32

10:04am – At the half way point the men are on a world record pace with 5 men within a second.

10:00am – Men hit 20km at 58:30

9:58am – A rather boring race to this point as the men are nearing the halfway point.

9:55am – Haile has too many pacers in my opinion. As a viewer, they make it hard to see him during the race.  I have nothing against pacers in general but they should be limited to 1 or 2 per runner.

9:52am – Florence Kiplagat is at 15km split in 49:50 with Radcliffe 9 seconds back. Radcliffe is continuing to lose distance. Commentators race side think she might be having an issue or injury.

9:46am – Haile 15km split – 43:51

9:39am – Overhead look at Paula and Flo’s lead pack (w/ Flo’s pacers)

9:34am – Paula and Florence reach 10km at 33:16.

9:32am – Very fast pace so far led by Haile. Edwin Kimaiyo and Patrick Makau are there as well.  Lead men did 11th-km in 2:55.

Memphis runner Feb Boswell crushed the Bartlett Park Ultra (BPU) 50K course record on Saturday in Bartlett, Tennessee with a blazing time of 4:02:12.

Feb on Facebook after the race, “Pretty stoked with doing a training run at the BPU 50K this morning and getting a course record! Great race put on by some great folks!”

The previous course record for the BPU trail ultra was 4:07:10 by Eric Charette back in 2009.

Stacey Shaver-Matson broke the female 50K course record with a 5:16:27.

The beauty of the BPU race is that you have three options.  You can stop at the 50K or continue to run either a 40 miler or 50 miler.

Matt Walker set a record, as well on Saturday, for the BPU 40 Miler – finishing in a time of 6:37:30.  The previous course record for the 40 miler was by Mark Denherder in 6:48:02

Second place finisher Chris Estes had the fourth fastest time in the 40 mile course’s history running a 6:52:32.

Karen Martin also broke her own female 40 mile course record by nearly 35 minutes.

Thomas Whalen was the overall winner of the 2011 Lean Horse 100 Mile Ultra on August 27-28 in Hot Springs, South Dakota. The St. Louis native finished the course in 15:34:12.

Matthew Ratterman, also from Missouri, was the 2nd finisher at 16:40:43.  Keith Straw finished 3rd in 18:41:52.

South Africa’s Ryan Sandes is the winner of the 2011 Leadville Trail 100 Mile Run.

Sandes ran the prestigious ultra marathon in a time of 16:46:56.  The third fastest time in race history according to @iRunFar‘s Byron Powell.

Second place went to Dylan Bowman in 17:18:59.

The 2nd annual Blister In The Sun Marathon took place this morning in Cookeville, Tennessee at Cane Creek Park.

Race Director Josh Hite, for the second year in a row, won his race. This year Hite completed the five loops with a time of 3:16:55. He bested the next closest finisher by nearly 30 minutes.

The battle for 2nd and 3rd places went down to the wire with Murfreesboro’s Chris Estes taking 2nd by 35 seconds over James Ramsey who had to settle for third.

The female winner was Jennifer Whitley who finished with a time of 4:19:42. The next two women’s finishers were Michelle Walker and Kelly Delmar.

Legendary Dallas Smith finished in 7th place with a time of 4:04:07.  Dallas’ buddy Albino Jiminez, of Spain, finished in 4:23:17. Jiminez just ran all the way across Spain back earlier this year.

12-year old Christopher Rayder finished in a shocking time of 4:08:49. Rumor is it that he ran a 3:23 at Grandfather Mountain Marathon last month.

Angela Ivory finished her 297th marathon while Texas resident Larry Macon finished his 707th career marathon.

Instead of finisher’s medals the runners received finisher’s frying pans!

Congrats to all of the finishers. Those five loops around Cane Creek Park and the elementary school in that heat can wear down the best of runners.

Here is a look at the full results from the 2011 ‘Last Annual Vol State 500K Foot Race’ that covered 314 miles through 5 states and the hot-oven that is the state of Tennessee.

73-year old Don Winkley, the Hemmingway of multi-day road racing, won the esteemed title of ‘King of the Road’ finishing the race in 5 days 14 hours 21 minutes and 32 seconds.

Naresh Kumar was the first unaided runner (without crew) to cross the finish line with a time of 7 days 55 minutes and 4 seconds. Naresh completed the brutal race wearing Vibram 5 Fingers the entire way.  He came in 4th overall.

Abi Meadows was the first woman to Castle Rock finishing with a time of 6 days 15 hours 45 minutes and 47 seconds. She finished third overall.

when your whole world consists of discomfort,

the only thing to do is laugh.

looking at the limping, bleary-eyed “runners” along the side of tenesse’s roads

we need to laugh a lot.

one of the lady runners (name withheld to protect the foolish)

after spotting a couple of shady looking characters parked beside the road

realized she had never tested her pepper spry.

so she reached down, pressed the trigger

and sprayed herself in the face.

the good news: it worked

more good news: “i needed a good cry anyway.”

another un-named participant told me;

“on day two i started to wish a truck would hit me.

i was imagining it just hitting me a little bit,

and only injuring me slightly…

so i would have a reason to stop”

i think this call for an updated list bio:

fantasy ultra goal: to be hit by a truck, and only injured slightly.

stu & shannon got up this morning in linden,

dragged their aching bodies back to the road,

and stumbled 5 miles back toward parsons.

altho it seems incomprehensible,

this is a common error at the vol-state.

the first time i remember it,

dirt thompson (within single digit miles of winning)

stopped briefly (to remove a rock from his shoe, i believe)

then began walking back the way he had come.

when we came to naresh & sal during yesterday’s drive thru

they expressed concern about sherry.

“she threw up, she is not drinking enough,…”

when i asked where she was;

“oh, she left an hour before we did from (the last stop)”

we found sherry about 5 miles ahead, and moving strong.

if sherry is in trouble, what does that say for sal & naresh?

lynnor & erika are actually turning a profit in the vol-state.

for whatever reason,

people keep stopping them and giving them money.

erika is considering this as NEW a summer job when she gets home;

“this pays better than my job!”

lynnor, on the other hand, is starting to feel slighted;

“she has gotten $30 so far. i’ve got $1!”

another pair of runners staggered into a town long after the stores had closed.

famished, they went to the only open establishment;

a bar; full of drunks in the wee hours.

they figured peanuts & potato chips were better than nothing.

after talking to the bartender for a while,

she went & got the frozen pizza she had brought to eat after her shift;

“you need it worse than i do.”

sometimes road angels are the only reason the uncrewed runners survive.

i have to stop here, they are badgering me to get off the computer.

but the stories could fill a book.

during the night he extended his lead on

mike m, who is leaving lewisburg, at 202

abi & sherry are both out of columbia at 181 (but not together)

joe judd is at 180,

as are naresh and sal (who are, none the less, not with joe)

josh holmes has moved back up heading for hampton at 157

fred murolo is right behind him at 154

erika & lenore are leaving hohenwald at 145

fred davis is just ahead of them, also listed at 145

and john price is about 146

paul lefelhocz has come back & repasse diane taylor

paul is at 133, and diane at 129.

stu and shannon, after traveling 5 miles the wrong way,

are in linden ar 125…. again.

and it just keeps getting better.
