Micah-Caballo-Blanco-True

Sad End To The Search For Micah ‘Caballo Blanco’ True

We are very sad to report that Micah ‘Caballo Blanco’ True was found dead today. The Silver City Sun-News is reporting that Caballo was found at 6 pm on Saturday in the Gila National Forest after a 4 day search. He had gone out for a run on Tuesday and never returned. I know a lot of prayers went out for his safe return but it was not meant to be.

As most of us who’ve read Born to Run know, Caballo was a central character in the book and was the Race Director for the Copper Canyon Ultra Marathon. It was after reading about Chris McDougall’s adventures in Copper Canyon with Caballo that I began to think of running as something that could be fun and an adventure and not something that was supposed to be painful or a punishment. Caballo’s attitude about it opened my eyes to what running could/should be and I know that it affected many other runners the same way. He was and will continue to be an inspiration to runners everywhere.

Rest in peace, Caballo Blanco. You are a legend in the running world and you will be missed.

Micah ‘Caballo Blanco’ True

Micah ‘Caballo Blanco’ True of Born To Run Fame Reported Missing

The Las Cruces Sun-News is reporting that Born To Run recluse runner Micah ‘Caballo Blanco’ True has been reported missing in the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico.

True hadn’t returned by Wednesday morning, Jane and Dan Brummer, co-owners of the Lodge, contacted state police and the search was initiated.

“The owners of the wilderness lodge where he was staying reported him missing because he didn’t come back,” said Fuller. “There was no indication of where he was going.”

Search teams from Las Cruces, Grant County and Socorro searched the area throughout Wednesday afternoon and into the night, Fuller said, and are continuing the effort today. He said that two helicopters from the NM State Police and the National Guard are coming today to assist the teams.

Blanco is the central character in Christopher McDougall’s 2009 best selling book ‘Born To Run.’  Blanco is a mysterious and reclusive character in the book who was living in Mexico at the time and close to the Tarahumara Indian tribe that is known for it’s incredible endurance running.

Flea Compares Running Marathon to Being on Acid

Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea tweeted moments ago comparing the feeling of running a marathon as the closest feeling to being on acid.

Flea in his own words, “Running a marathon is the closest feeling to being on acid without actual LSD consumption that I know of”

Flea, real name Michael Balzary, has run the L.A. Marathon each of the past two years.

In 2011 he finished in 3:53:00 (Full Story). Yesterday (2012), he finished in 3:41:49 PR.

Lance Armstrong Finishes 2nd in Panama Half Ironman (Results)

7-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong finished second on Sunday in the Panama Half Ironman to New Zealand’s Bevan Docherty.

Docherty won with a time of 3:50:13 holding off Armstrong by 42 seconds as Lance finished in 3:50:55.

Men’s Race – Top 10 Finish

1 3:50:13 16 Bevan Docherty Santa Cruz CA NZL
2 3:50:55 0:42 24 Lance Armstron Austin TX USA
3 3:52:59 2:46 5 Richie Cunningh Boulder CO AUS
4 3:53:38 3:25 4 Rasmus Henning Tuineje DOM
5 3:54:44 4:31 12 Romain Guillaum Montmorot FRA
6 3:55:30 5:18 7 Jesse Thomas Springfield OR USA
7 3:56:21 6:09 1 Chris Lieto Danville CA USA
8 3:58:32 8:19 23 Ivan Vasilyev Moscow RUS
9 4:00:53 10:40 9 Oscar Galindez Santos ARG
10 4:01:24 11:11 6 Bert Jammaer Boom BEL

Docherty, who overtook Armstrong in the latter portion of the run, claims Armstrong ignored him somewhat after finishing.

“I’m not sure what it was all about. I can only assume he was just disappointed to get beaten,” Docherty said.

Docherty said that later on that Armstrong did finally shake his hand and congratulate him.

“I did shake his hand a little bit later. He’s on a completely different level and planet to us guys [triathletes],” Docherty said. “It’s great to have him in the sport, he certainly adds something. It’s an eye-opener to see how he gets mobbed and the chaos around him.”

Which of the three legs did Armstrong struggle the most? You’ll never guess it…

Docherty stated, “I thought Lance would absolutely cream us on the bike, but he was probably in a similar position to me where he wasn’t too sure how to pace himself,” he said. “He certainly looked like he was holding back and that was probably why he ran so well off the bike.”

Either way, Armstrong was impressive on Sunday and perhaps the greatest endurance athlete of our generation or any generation.

Armstrong will keep working at it until he can dominate the triathlon and Ironman.

RHCP Flea’s Wise Words on Distance Running

RHCP Flea’s Wise Words on Distance Running

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ bassist Flea tweeted the following late tonight about distance running:

“Distance running is the best way to learn how to stay present in the moment I have ever found”

Flea ran his first marathon at the 2011 Los Angeles Marathon. I was lucky enough to finish around the same time as he did and talk to him briefly in the downpour that had soaked us all 26.2 miles.

I’m glad to hear he has stuck with it.  He ran the L.A. Marathon to raise money for his charity, the Silver Lake Conservatory (website).

Angela Ivory – Joshua Holmes

The Heroes of Our Sport Aren’t Usually Near the Front

Too often those that bring home the trophies from a race are given all the praise when those that have done the more remarkable feat are further back in the pack.

Angela Ivory has completed over 300 marathons and ultramarathons.  She has completed six 100-mile ultras.  Her accomplishments will never make ESPN or Sports Illustrated, but that is only because we live in a world that judges any accomplishment by who is the first to come across the line.

Angela has been battling Metastatic Breast Cancer for quite some time.  I’ve been told it has now consumed most of her body.  She has been battling it for years, and the last two, I have known her.  I know her from running…really long distances.  I know her because she is one of the friendliest and nicest runners I’ve ever had the joy of competing with.  She has never mentioned one word about cancer to me, but I know.  I’ve known for about as long as I’ve known her.

Runners talk, especially about runners that we respect and do things that amaze and inspire us.  She has running friends that truly love , respect, and want to share her story.  That is how I know what Angela is battling.

Angela has continued to complete one ultra after another.  Her times might have slowed, but her indomitable will has risen to a level that perhaps only someone like Aron Ralston would understand.

In 2011 to date, Angela has completed 27 ultras and marathons. 297 of her 303 marathons/ultras have taken place since 2004.  You can do the math.

Angela’s last race was on September 24th.  The cancer and medications are really hitting Angela hard right now.  She is struggling to get enough oxygen into her lungs to do even the most simple things like walk a block.

But Angela is still going ham against her immune system and that bastard of a disease.  She is still prodding away one step at a time, but now her 100 miler is a simple 3-miler.

From Angela Ivory’s Most Recent Blog Post, ‘3 Miles a Day’ (Read Full Blog Post):

Yesterday, I could only walk the three miles. I had a fever and neck and shoulder pains. I was so cold on a bright, sunshiny day, even with a hat and two long-sleeved shirts. I saw runners out in shorts and short-sleeved shirts, and I envied their even pace and smooth strides. Surprisingly, the three mile walk was only about five minutes longer than the three mile run/walk the day before. The major goal is to finish the three miles under an hour. It’s not much of a goal, but it’s attainable and doesn’t stress me out too much. On Tuesday, I finished in 53 minutes, and on Wednesday, I barely made it in 58 minutes, picking up the walking pace in the last mile to my townhouse. I plan to get the three mile course I’ve mapped out under 45 minutes, and then I’ll do a 5K to truly see where I am.

I can run for a block before I get dizzy from lack of oxygen. It takes me two blocks to breathe comfortably and then I can run another block. I’m hoping that as my body becomes accustomed to surviving on less oxygen that I can run two blocks and walk one block for recovery. Ideally, I would love to get to the point where I can run a mile before taking a walk break. I’ve mapped out a pretty flat route, so that I won’t have the added challenge of tackling an uphill climb. That’s coming from someone who would use hills as speed work, because she hated running on a track for intervals. Wow! Things have really changed. Now I walk all hills, and I love 12 or 24 hour races on a track, because I’m only 1/4 mile from my drop bag and a camp chair, lol.

The best thing about my three miles a day routine is that I get to be outside. It makes me feel better mentally to be able to still move although I am incredibly slower. It’s raining and very cold today, but I don’t care. I’m still a runner at heart, so a little wetness and coldness are not going to scare me off. I’ll still be outside on a beautiful, rainy, and cold day, dressed like I live in Alaska, lol.

So many people in life don’t fight even when they have every advantage imaginable at their disposal.  Some people get punched once in the face and never get off the canvas.

Then there are the very rare people, like Angela, who do things that the most abled of us deem impossible or even foolish.

The men and women that win races, place, and take home cash deserve the praise and adoration they receive, but most often the person overcoming the most, climbing the biggest walls, battling the ugliest demons, or having their own Don Quixote moment are doing so near the back of the field in complete anonymity.

We all run for a reason, some of us from something, others of us towards something, and yet others of us to help overcome something.

What Angela has done and is continuing to do is an inspiration that we should all remember.  She can’t afford to take a day for granted, yet most of us do because we’re pathetic.

Be sure to take a moment at your next race to congratulate someone besides the winners on what they accomplished that day.

When you see Angela out there on the course give her a hug and thank her for how she has encouraged so many by her intense will.  Running binds us in such a tight and intricate way that the non-runner will never really understand.

And if Angela can continue to do three more miles with an evil, host invader claiming more and more of her body then your excuse better be damn good!

UPDATE: I’m sad to learn today that Angela is no longer with us. She was 44-years old. She showed all of us that knew her what bravery and courage is all about. (May 31, 2012)

Jennie Finch Starting the 2011 NYC Marathon

Jennie Finch Passes 30,000 Runners at NYC Marathon to Raise $30,000 for Charity

Legendary softball player Jennie Finch completed the 2011 ING NYC Marathon on Sunday.  She finished with a time of 4:05:26.

Finch was the VERY last runner to start the race, but there was a reason for her caboose start.

Her publicist emailed this to me after the race:

Hope all is well! Thought you might be interested to know that Jennie Finch just ran the New York City marathon just four months after giving birth to her second son.

Though she is best known around the world for her 70+ mile an hour fastball, this morning the Olympic softball legend Jennie Finch’s speed was measured a little differently. She hit the “Start” button on her Timex GPS watch to begin the 2011 ING New York City marathon dead last and for each runner she passed, Timex donated $1 to the New York Road Runners Youth Programs. Finch crossed the finish line with an unofficial time of 4:05:26, passing approximately 30,000 people.

Congrats to Jennie and a special thank you to her sponsor, Timex, for donating so much money to the New York Road Runners Youth Programs!

Apolo Ohno Runs New York City Marathon in 3:25:12

8-time Olympic speed skating champion Apolo Ohno ran the ING New York City Marathon on Sunday in NYC.

Ohno showed he is a great all-around athlete by running the 26.2 mile course in 3:25:12.

Apolo decided to enter the race back in February when Subway spokesman Jared Fogle challenged him to do it (full story).

He jokingly tweeted a warning to fellow warnings pre-race:

Warning 2 all, I apologize in advance 4 those who run on my left side. I’ve a severe tendency 2 take sharp lefts consistently. #shorttrack
