STATS

Years Running: Started at age 1
Favorite Race Distance: Marathon
Favorite PR: Past weekend at Duke City Marathon, first 13.1 at 1:34 of the marathon
Favorite Race: So many.. San Francisco Marathon 2010 or Reggae Marathon in Jamaica 2003
Favorite Bling: A head band, pink, that was given to me by the RD of the Sogonapmit Marathon in 2011 along with a piece of carved wood. It was for winning the women’s marathon out of 5! It was in the middle of nowhere in American Fork , UT and started at 3AM and climbed up a Mountain for 13.1 and then we ran back down. Amazing.
Next Race: This weekend an 18 miler in Memphis, TN and then a speed 5 k in Memphis to prepare for The Richmond VA Marathon November 10th.
What Makes You FEEL Fast?: When I get to ‘flow’, I look down at my watch and I look again- I am going faster than I thought and was not even trying. A wonderful wonderful gliding run feeling.

FUN RUNNING QUESTIONS

Who inspires your running and why?
I run to achieve my best that I can be as an athlete and to try to reach my own goals that I have set: To Run A Sub 4 Marathon in every state and to become faster in my marathon (goal to have it down to 3:10 by the end of 2012 and then working on each year to subtract another 10 min of marathon time).

My friends inspire me so much also. I have met the best runners and friends, ever, through the Marathon Maniacs club. I feel that in almost every state I know someone that I can trust and run with. Wonderful people. My recent experience with the KarhuTeam/ Running shoes has also been inspiring me. I have met, through them, talented and fast marathoners that are traveling to races in the US and in Finland. Karhu has provided support and encouragement pre and post race!

What’s the most beautiful place that you’ve run?
The bridge when I was running the San Francisco Marathon and the fog over the water was amazing…. Another was the wild horses I saw while at Missoula MT Marathon , such a pretty place ( MT).

What is the thing you splurge on after a race?
If I place top 3 or something, then perhaps a new racing shirt or hair band…other than that, nothing.

Why do you race?
#1) The competition, to try to meet my racing goal times, and to #2) Hang out with my running friends and running family. So, so much fun.

What is the one piece of running gear you can’t leave the house without?
Karhu Shoes – my Karhu Forward Fulcrums or racing flats.

If you can’t run, you’re ________?
Reading, kitty cat hanging out at home, and helping others as a Behavioral Psychologist. I try to help others make concrete reachable goals and also then to meet them! I love helping others so, so much and this also helps to fulfill my life.

We also asked Alicia if there was anything else she wanted to share and she had this to say:
I have run 78 marathons to date and 36 Sub 4hour states. I was lucky enough to run the Boston Marathon in 2003. Wow. I have also been able to help PanCAN charity through my great running friend and RIF member, Hideki Kinoshita (RIF #88) – He inspires me.

I LOVE TO TRAVEL and to be healthy so this is a large part as to why I have been running so many races- to see all that I can see in this lovely world and to meet others while achieving my racing goals . Meeting others and sharing experiences unites us all with running.

***

You’d think someone who has been running as long as Alicia has would have burned out by now but she is still working hard to improve and from my emails with her and her posts on Facebook and Twitter, I can feel her excitement. She truly does love racing and meeting fellow runners. I can’t even imagine having run 78 marathons and having 36 sub 4 marathons. I hope to someday break that 4 hour mark so Alicia is definitely motivating me to go for it!

Thank you for sharing with us Alicia. Good luck at your next few races. I know you’ll Run It Fast!

Cary Morgan and Micah Reagan – Runners – Run It Fast

No PR for Cary Morgan but His ‘Proposal Run’ Earns Him Ultimate Prize

When runner Cary Morgan decided he wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Micah Reagan, he used his legs and modern technology to come up with one of the most unique and romantic ways to propose to a fellow running fanatic.

Last weekend, Cary ran a 7.5 mile route in Birmingham, Alabama.  The distance or his pace that day were nothing spectacular for Morgan who is an accomplished marathoner.

He had Micah, whom he’d been dating for several months, meet him at the local coffee shop at the conclusion of his run.   Cary had his computer with him and was eager to show Micah his Garmin data upload from his satellite watch. A confused Micah soon realized that her boyfriend loves ‘out and backs.’

When Micah saw the route she quickly realized that it wasn’t just an ordinary training run for Cary. It was a ‘Proposal Run’ that would change each of their lives from that day forward.

As the New Kids On The Block so eloquently put it several years ago, “Step by step ooh baby/Gonna get to you girl /Step by step ooh baby /Really want you in my world”

Cary gave me a little bit of insight on the inspiration for his Proposal Run:

“Just hit me all the sudden. Never heard anything like it. I have a couple friends that once suggested we run routes that spelled curse words but that was yrs ago”

So we asked Micah for her version of the events that took place on October 13, 2012.  This is what she had to say:

How did you and Cary meet and what was the courtship like?

“Cary and I are two people that have a passion for running and met about a year ago in a running group in Birmingham, AL.  We have shared countless miles together both in training and races.  When we started running together, we immediately knew this friendship was different.  Cary has always said he wanted to marry his best friend and this was indeed an instant friendship for life.”

The way Cary proposed is such a unique way for a runner to propose to the runner of his dreams. How did he make that happen? What details went into the proposal that the Garmin map doesn’t tell?

“Cary logged on to a route maker website and designed a special course in downtown Birmingham.  It was a 7.5 mile route that spelled out “Will U Marry Me?”  He went out on Saturday morning and prayed his route would record correctly on his Garmin.  He had one shot to get it right.  He ran up and back, one block at a time. Once he finished the question, in typical runner fashion, ran all the way back to his car with the Garmin still on to receive complete credit for his venture.

When Cary logged in to Garmin connect, there it was!  Perfect, minus the U, which he had to make larger because of construction.  It was exactly as he had planned.  He asked me to meet him at a local coffee shop that most runners frequent after Saturday morning long runs. He warned everyone there of what he was about to do.  When I came to the coffee shop he was so excited about his run and wanted to show me.

The only reason I was not running too was an Achilles injury that has me cross training.  He began to want to show me his run and I was so upset that I could not run. My arms were crossed and I was thinking, why is he torturing me like this? Then it all made sense.  Cary said, “look at my route” and when I stared for a minute my mouth dropped as I discovered what it said.

All I could get out was, “are you serious?”  Then he dropped to one knee and began to tell me I was his best friend and that life would be complete if we finished together, still all I could get out was, “are you serious?”  He then pulls out a ring and places it in front of me.  I stared in utter joy and excitement that this IS for real and that here I was with my best friend and person I have grown to love with all my heart. All I could get out was “YES!”

He then shared several  videos with congratulatory messages that he had asked our friends to send.  They were absolutely beautiful and made the moment even more special.  I was in disbelief of how many people showed us love that day, some even showing up to the coffee shop  to congratulate us!  I am a lucky girl who has found her prince charming.  Our road to each other was long, hard and seemed endless, but in perfect timing we were placed in each other’s paths to finish the race together!”

So what do you two have planned for your wedding?

“I have to give the wedding details too, right? We thought nothing else would be more fitting than to have a running wedding at the Seaside, FL half marathon in March. Several of our friends have signed up to share in our special day.  I am going to wear a running dress and Cary is wearing a tuxedo t-shirt.  When the race is over, we will run out on the beach to begin life’s race that is marked before us.  We have trained hard and recovered from numerous injuries and are well prepared to begin our marathon journey as Mr and Mrs Cary Morgan!”

On behalf of runners all over the globe Run It Fast wants to congratulate Cary and Micah and wish them the best as they head towards the starting line of marriage together.

Cary’s ‘Proposal Run’ Garmin Data Upload

RUMOR: If you run Cary’s ‘Proposal Run’ route backwards it spells out “Bart Yasso is the Devil!”

Cary is member RIF #201 in Run It Fast – The Club.

What Makes You FEEL Fast?: Trail running in the fall and spring.

FUN RUNNING QUESTIONS

What’s the most beautiful place that you’ve run?
I grew up running the trails in Chattanooga.  It doesn’t get much better than that.  Rock Creek puts on a trail series out there, and I would highly recommend to everyone to look it up.  There is no way to compare the running in West Tennessee to East Tennessee.  There is an overlook in the Stump Jump 50k called Snoopers Rock.  That view pretty much sums up running in Chattanooga.

What is the one piece of running gear you can’t leave the house without?
Body Glide – and Bandaids… I feel awkward.

What was your biggest “don’t” of a race?
Don’t NOT train for a race. The first time I ran a marathon (St. Jude Marathon in 2006), it was the first time I even thought about doing a marathon.  My buddy wanted to do the half, but at that time, even a half seemed like an overwhelming distance.  I thought to myself, “If I’m going to run a long race, I’m going to go all out.”  I didn’t know how to train, so every time I ran, I just ran for as long as I could until I got tired.  I probably never ran more than 12 miles at one time before the actual day.  At about 15 miles into the marathon, I realized I wasn’t going to make it to the end.  I decided I would find someone who looked “official” at the next aid station to tell them I wouldn’t be able to make it to the end.  When I got to the aid station, everyone looked like volunteers. I knew I could make it one more mile, so I decided to find someone official at the aid station.  This kept happening until around 23 miles in.  At that point, I decided, “I’ve come this far.  I might as well finish.”  The only reason I finished the race was because I didn’t know how to drop out of it.  I didn’t run for about three years after that one.

What running moment are you most proud of?
Getting 2nd in the Marathon for Memories.  It was set up as a relay, and I decided to run the whole thing.  I got 2nd overall.

If you can’t run, you’re ________?
Dead. I’ve been doing a running streak (I run at least 2 miles every day).  This has been going on for over a year.  Seriously, if I’m not running, I’m probably dead.  When my wife was being induced for labor, I was looking at my watch wondering how much time I had because I hadn’t gotten my two miles in yet. I drove her so crazy, she finally just said to go run.

***

Great first marathon story, don’t you think? 😉 I think that’s definitely a good “don’t” lesson but also goes to show that you can do more than you think you can. Pretty impressive! I’m also impressed that he’s got a run streak going for more than a year now. ..and that his wife let him go for a run when she was in labor! A run streak isn’t easy. So much of our everyday life can interfere with it – family, work, travel, illness, injuries, etc. It takes commitment and dedication to keep going. Congrats Nathan!

My longest run streak is 107 days but I hope to  streak for a year one of these days. How about you? Have you ever done a run streak? What’s the longest you’ve streaked?

Thanks for sharing, Nathan. Good luck at the Chickamauga Battlefield Marathon and Run It Fast!

Christopher Hesch – Runner – Los Angeles

Elite Runner Christian Hesch Admits to EPO Doping

Elite road-runner Christian Hesch has admitted to EPO blood doping after being confronted by several of his Nike Team Run L.A. teammates who found an empty vial in his stuff.

Hesch, a self-described “profligate road racer,” said that over two years, beginning in August 2010, he injected himself with EPO 54 times before an empty EPO vial was found in his bag and he was reported to antidoping officials. In that time, he won nearly $40,000 in prize money in more than 75 races, including international competitions, United States championships and local road races.

Hesch, 33, gained national fame earlier this year when he out ran Ethiopia’s Fikadu Lemma and Demesse Tefera at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence Half Marathon to win with a time of 1:07:05.

Two days prior Hesch had run a 4:00.01 mile at the GNC Live Well Liberty Mile in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The USADA has a case pending against Hesch and has ordered that he not race until they decide how to punish him. (USADA has been a bit busy with it’s loaded case against cyclist Lance Armstrong over the past few weeks).

“It would be fairly expensive if I wanted to fight it,” Hesch said. “Usada only brings cases when they’re pretty sure, and this is coming from a guy with a pending case.”

Hesch could face a 2-year ban from the USADA.

Competitor’s Mario Fraioli felt miffed and misled by Hesch giving his story to the New York Times when he had been working with Hesch for days about an exclusive for Competitor Magazine (full story).

Fraioli ran the piece (see below) last night after getting word that the NYT was about to publish it’s exclusive piece on Hesch.

Hesch’s public apology piece that Fraioli had been waiting on, and was published last night, titled ‘Christian Hesch Publicly Apologizes for Doping‘ can be read HERE.

“I will promise you that when I return to racing if you yell “doper” or “you suck” at me as I pass by, I will not flip you the bird, nor will I throw a sarcastic thumbs-up. I might wave though, and I’ll be happy to hear you out after the race, no matter how rough the content. As Tyler Hamilton said so well, “I’m an ex-doper, and I don’t suck.” I hope you’ll feel the same way about me after sharing a word, a race, or a beer with me. I look forward to seeing you all on the roads, next year.”

What are your thoughts on Hesch’s confession?  Do you really think he’s sincere in his apology or just sorry he got caught?  Have you ever suspected one of your racing peers was doping?

Josh at YT100

Crewing At Yellowstone-Teton 100 Mile

RIF #1 Joshua Holmes at Yellowstone-Teton 100

Note from Lisa: The following is a post from my blog about crewing RIF #1 Joshua Holmes at the Yellowstone-Teton 100 Mile race on October 6-7, 2012. It was my first time crewing for a friend and I did it for a few reasons:

  • I wanted to give back to the running community that has helped me so much.
  • I wanted to do this for Josh because I’ve seen how much support he’s given others and not just those in RIF – The Club.
  • Selfishly, I wanted to see what a 100 mile race was like from the inside as prep for my first 100 miler, Javelina Jundred.
  • Also selfishly…I’d never been to Idaho, Montana, or Wyoming and wanted to see them.

The whole experience was amazing! Read on to check my perspective on the Yellowstone-Teton 100…

Crewing At Yellowstone-Teton 100 Mile

I have not run in 4 days! 4! And I don’t even care. That’s pretty wild, eh? But I experienced one of the most amazing, fun, and inspiring weekends ever so it more than made up for the lack of running for myself. Besides, I got to see plenty of running while crewing Joshua Holmes (@bayou). This was my first time  crewing a runner during a 100 miler so I was a little nervous. Of course, I didn’t let Josh know that! But I really wanted to help him finish this run and PR so I had a few goals for this weekend:

For Josh

1. Get him to the race start.

2. Help him finish and PR at YT100.

3. Get him home safe!

For Me

1. Don’t get lost during the race.

2. Stay awake.

3. Don’t lock the keys in the car.

I’m happy to report that all goals were met!

So, that’s the short story. The long story is this…

(Yeah, you knew that was coming, right?)

PRE-RACE DUTIES

So on Thursday, I picked up Josh on the way to LAX. We were flying to Salt Lake City and then on to Idaho Falls. There was some traffic and the line to go thru the checkpoint was super long so it was iffy but I finagled us into the short line and we made it to the plane on time. Woo! 1st flight was a go. We only had 30 min between flights so when we landed in SLC, we ran thru the airport to our next flight and made that in time too. Woo! Flights…check.

We stayed in Idaho Falls on Thursday night and drove to West Yellowstone on Friday after hitting up Wal-Mart for supplies. We made it to West Yellowstone around 3:30 with plenty of time to spare before the runner’s meeting at 5. To pass the time, we went to the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center to check things out. I almost lost him to a Grizzly there!

But I was able to save him from the grizzly so he made it to the runner’s meeting. 😉

After the meeting, we went and got dinner (delicious lasagna) and then I dropped him off at the hotel while I went to get a few more things. Then I went back to the hotel to get as much sleep as possible to prep for the night ahead.

In the morning, I woke up and sent Josh a text to make sure he was up and then got ready, ate, and packed up. I got Josh’s stuff too and packed them in the car so he could head to the race start. He got to race start on time…barely…but on time. Goal #1 for Josh complete!!! Thank god.

YELLOWSTONE TETON 100

So…a little background first. Before we arrived in Idaho, we thought the overnight temps for the race would be 26 degrees…which is flipping cold, right? But then Josh had checked on Friday and the predicted low for West Yellowstone was SEVEN degrees! Insane! But Josh was going thru with it as did all the other runners. Brave souls.

Luckily…ok, not lucky but at least a little better…it was 12 degrees when the runners started out. I took longer to pack the car than I thought so I didn’t make it to the start line in time for the start but decided to wait in front of the hotel where they would be passing twice. I cheered Josh and the other runners as they passed me going and then coming back and then jumped in the car to head out on the course…and warm up!

I decided to go out a few miles and wait for Josh. I parked by the course photographer and the flash as he took pictures helped identify the runners in the dark. And then there was Josh! And Oh.My.God…he was covered in frost. All of his hair was white with frost, from his eyebrows to his beard to his hair. It kind of freaked me out a little but I didn’t say anything. He told me that his bottle had frozen and he gave it to me. The water bottle that I had taken out with me to fill his Amphipod had already started to freeze too. Yes, it was that cold. As I was driving on the course, the temp dropped to 9 degrees! But Josh ran on and I drove out a couple of miles to meet him. AFTER slipping and falling as I ran back to the car. Doh! But no damage thankfully!

After that, I would leap frog Josh on the course. He’d ask me to wait for him 2-4 miles ahead and then I’d give him whatever he needed: water, nuun, roctane, boost, etc. He would usually tell me what he wanted at the next stop so I could have it ready but sometimes I’d have to scramble. There were a couple of mishaps along the way.

At one point, he told me that he needed to use the restroom and I must have stopped at every building along the road and they were all closed! One of the gas stations was even closed already for the winter. That is so weird. But I finally found a place. Then he asked me to find him a cheeseburger and the only cheeseburger I could find was the last one at this one little store. I microwaved it with their presets but when he tried to eat it, the burger patty was rock solid. Damn it. He didn’t say anything but I’m sure he was disappointed. 🙁

But he kept running. And it got warmer so he could start shedding layers.

Around mile 30, his knee started giving him trouble. And it was bad. He put a knee brace on and kept running.

He seemed really down about it and thought he might have to DNF. I told him to just be smart about it. But he changed shoes and kept running. He was a machine. And I was really impressed by him.

Saturday, during the day was interesting for me because I not only got to watch Josh but the other runners around him. I’d see the same mix of runners each time I drove ahead to wait for him. They helped me keep track of him. I’d see this runner or that runner and know that he would be coming soon. Then I would grab what I think he’d need or what he told me wanted and run out to meet him. Then I would walk/run with him a little to get the bottle or gel packet and instructions for the next stop.

The other thing that was cool was that I got to meet the crews for the other runners and we would talk while we waited for our runner to come by. And I would get to see what they were doing for their runners and learn a little bit about everyone.

And of course, the views along the course were pretty darn cool!

When Josh hit the aid station past the 50 miles and he was still running/walking and didn’t talk about stopping again, I knew he would finish. So then it was about getting ready for the coming night for both of us. He came thru the aid station at mile 60.5 in 10th place and after that, I saw that he was starting to pass some people. He was doing amazing!

So the day time in the sun was nice. No jacket required. And then the sun set.

And the temperature dropped at least 20 degrees faster than you can put on a glove. I was not looking forward to the night ahead. I’d froze my butt off in the short time between the start of the race and sunrise. What would it be like with hours out there? For me, the other crew and most of all for the runners? We started adding layers to Josh and eventually hand warmers. I’m not sure how much it helped but he kept running. Like a machine.

For a while, Josh ran with another runner named Tom who was doing the race without a crew. Josh asked me to get him water at one of our stops and I did. And then later that night, I asked Tom again if he needed water and while I was filling his bottle he told me Josh was doing well but to not turn on the heater for him so he wouldn’t be tempted to stay in the car. But there were a couple of times that Josh asked me to turn on the heater and I did because I didn’t have the heart to say no with how cold it was. That and he kept asking for something hot to eat at the aid stations but they didn’t have anything hot until about mile 90! But Josh was very disciplined so he got going as soon as he’d eaten or changed or whatever. I didn’t have to push him. He was pushing himself.

The night was freezing! But it was beautiful. There was an awesome moonrise w/a golden moon. And then there were a bajillion stars. I made a bunch of wishes: that Josh’s knee would stop hurting, that he would finish with a PR, that I wouldn’t get lost, etc. I’m glad a few of them worked. 😉

Josh was passing more people on the course and it caught me off guard at one stop. The pattern was solo light, solo light, pair of lights, Josh, pair of lights. And then at one point he became the second solo light! I was like wow, he must be have switched into beast mode. So after that it got a little lonelier since there wasn’t other crew around. I’d kind of relied on them leap frogging me too so I would know I was headed in the right direction and I had to do the last part completely on my own, but didn’t get lost once! Woo! So Goal #1 for me was accomplished.

At the 2nd to the last stop, I almost fell asleep. I closed my eyes for a few seconds and the clicking of the hazard lights was hypnotic. It was close, but I didn’t sleep. Goal #2 for me accomplished. But that stop and the last stop were rough for me. At the last stop, I was walking toward Josh and listening to these dogs barking and wondering if they were going to come out at us and it took me a while to realize he was telling me he needed boost. But I finally got the message and got some for him.

And that was my last stop with him and I drove ahead to meet him at the end. He was really doing this! Just a few miles left after everything that he’d fought thru – his knee, the freezing cold, not getting the hot food he needed, me getting things wrong sometimes. He was about to finish.

The race finished at Dreamchasers, which is the store owned by Lisa Smith-Batchen and her husband. Lisa was out on the course so I was talking with her husband while we waited for Josh to come in. Being out the cold and the excitement of seeing Josh finish woke me up a little but I was still not 100% awake, I think, because when he came running in he asked me where my camera was and I was like damn, how could I have forgot that. I didn’t even have my phone on me. 🙁

So, I didn’t catch the big moment but Josh finished in 21:23:55, over an hour PR for him AND he was 5th Overall and 1st in his Age Group! Totally amazing considering his knee and the weather!

So Goal #2 for Josh accomplished! Oh, and I never locked the keys in the car either so Goal #3 for me was accomplished too. Funny, that Josh told me after he was worried about that too. And about me getting lost. Whatever!

POST-RACE DUTIES

So the race was done but my crewing duties weren’t over. I still had to get Josh home but our first priority was to get him warm and feeling better after running the 100. But I got him safely to the hotel after the race and then to our hotel in Idaho Falls the next day too. And I got him to the airport on time. And I got him home after we landed in LAX. And that’s even with him deciding to take the roller coaster, crazy narrow, steep detour to his house. It was fun…sort of…because he showed me where Steven Tyler lived but my gas warning light came on so when he said did I want to do any more sight seeing, I was like no, let’s just get you home. I was so relieved to drop him off! I’d gotten home in one piece so Goal #3 for Josh accomplished.

Whew.

Seriously, the crewing was not hard at all. He was patient with me and never acted like a diva. I almost wish he would have though because he was too stubborn to let me help! If you’re reading this Josh…learn to accept help from your friends without us having to twist your arm. Sheesh. 😉

I learned a lot during this experience. I saw some beautiful scenery. Met some amazing runners and their crews. And got to watch a good friend accomplish an incredible goal. Definitely a successful and rewarding experience and one I would do again in a heart beat.

If you get the opportunity to do this for a friend, I highly recommend it. You will be inspired.

Oh, one last pic of the two of us back at the finish the next day where we hung out for a while (also a lot of fun since there were other runners and crew back at the finish too).

Thanks for reading!

Susan Ford – Ironman

Ironma’am Susan Ford

Susan Ford at Ironman Florida, November 4, 2006

Susan Ford is a monster. Stay out of her way and you won’t get hurt. That’s a hyperbolic way to paint the tender-hearted veterinarian from Cookeville, Tennessee, but, too, a way of saying she is the hardest charging training and racing fanatic I’ve seen.

At this moment she is in Kona, Haiwaii awaiting Saturday’s World Championship Ironman. As is Amy Dodson, another friend, with whom Susan is sharing a hotel room. Yesterday’s post was about Amy. This one is about Susan.

Recent training ride along Blackburn Fork, Jackson County, Tennessee

I knew Susan when running a 10K put her at risk of overuse injuries. No more. Fourteen Ironman races have changed that, transformed her to a hard body that could cut glass. Her Twitter handle is @Ironmaam. That’s a good title for the story too.

Run Crazy Horse Marathon Medal (2012)

This is the medal for the 2012 Run Crazy Horse Marathon held on September 30, 2012 in Hill City, South Dakota.  It is made of clay and boasts the sculpture of what the Crazy Horse Memorial will eventually look like when completed many decades from now.  It has a very charming, homemade look and the leather strap for a ribbon gives it a rugged, western feel.

There were 753 runners that participated in either the full or the half marathon.  Runners were more likely to run the half marathon, which sported roughly a 900 foot net descent, while the full marathon added a gradual climb from miles 13 – 20.

For a more detailed recap of the race, please visit Dan’s Marathon.
