Cary Morgan and Micah Reagan – Runners – Run It Fast

No PR for Cary Morgan but His ‘Proposal Run’ Earns Him Ultimate Prize

When runner Cary Morgan decided he wanted to propose to his girlfriend, Micah Reagan, he used his legs and modern technology to come up with one of the most unique and romantic ways to propose to a fellow running fanatic.

Last weekend, Cary ran a 7.5 mile route in Birmingham, Alabama.  The distance or his pace that day were nothing spectacular for Morgan who is an accomplished marathoner.

He had Micah, whom he’d been dating for several months, meet him at the local coffee shop at the conclusion of his run.   Cary had his computer with him and was eager to show Micah his Garmin data upload from his satellite watch. A confused Micah soon realized that her boyfriend loves ‘out and backs.’

When Micah saw the route she quickly realized that it wasn’t just an ordinary training run for Cary. It was a ‘Proposal Run’ that would change each of their lives from that day forward.

As the New Kids On The Block so eloquently put it several years ago, “Step by step ooh baby/Gonna get to you girl /Step by step ooh baby /Really want you in my world”

Cary gave me a little bit of insight on the inspiration for his Proposal Run:

“Just hit me all the sudden. Never heard anything like it. I have a couple friends that once suggested we run routes that spelled curse words but that was yrs ago”

So we asked Micah for her version of the events that took place on October 13, 2012.  This is what she had to say:

How did you and Cary meet and what was the courtship like?

“Cary and I are two people that have a passion for running and met about a year ago in a running group in Birmingham, AL.  We have shared countless miles together both in training and races.  When we started running together, we immediately knew this friendship was different.  Cary has always said he wanted to marry his best friend and this was indeed an instant friendship for life.”

The way Cary proposed is such a unique way for a runner to propose to the runner of his dreams. How did he make that happen? What details went into the proposal that the Garmin map doesn’t tell?

“Cary logged on to a route maker website and designed a special course in downtown Birmingham.  It was a 7.5 mile route that spelled out “Will U Marry Me?”  He went out on Saturday morning and prayed his route would record correctly on his Garmin.  He had one shot to get it right.  He ran up and back, one block at a time. Once he finished the question, in typical runner fashion, ran all the way back to his car with the Garmin still on to receive complete credit for his venture.

When Cary logged in to Garmin connect, there it was!  Perfect, minus the U, which he had to make larger because of construction.  It was exactly as he had planned.  He asked me to meet him at a local coffee shop that most runners frequent after Saturday morning long runs. He warned everyone there of what he was about to do.  When I came to the coffee shop he was so excited about his run and wanted to show me.

The only reason I was not running too was an Achilles injury that has me cross training.  He began to want to show me his run and I was so upset that I could not run. My arms were crossed and I was thinking, why is he torturing me like this? Then it all made sense.  Cary said, “look at my route” and when I stared for a minute my mouth dropped as I discovered what it said.

All I could get out was, “are you serious?”  Then he dropped to one knee and began to tell me I was his best friend and that life would be complete if we finished together, still all I could get out was, “are you serious?”  He then pulls out a ring and places it in front of me.  I stared in utter joy and excitement that this IS for real and that here I was with my best friend and person I have grown to love with all my heart. All I could get out was “YES!”

He then shared several  videos with congratulatory messages that he had asked our friends to send.  They were absolutely beautiful and made the moment even more special.  I was in disbelief of how many people showed us love that day, some even showing up to the coffee shop  to congratulate us!  I am a lucky girl who has found her prince charming.  Our road to each other was long, hard and seemed endless, but in perfect timing we were placed in each other’s paths to finish the race together!”

So what do you two have planned for your wedding?

“I have to give the wedding details too, right? We thought nothing else would be more fitting than to have a running wedding at the Seaside, FL half marathon in March. Several of our friends have signed up to share in our special day.  I am going to wear a running dress and Cary is wearing a tuxedo t-shirt.  When the race is over, we will run out on the beach to begin life’s race that is marked before us.  We have trained hard and recovered from numerous injuries and are well prepared to begin our marathon journey as Mr and Mrs Cary Morgan!”

On behalf of runners all over the globe Run It Fast wants to congratulate Cary and Micah and wish them the best as they head towards the starting line of marriage together.

Cary’s ‘Proposal Run’ Garmin Data Upload

RUMOR: If you run Cary’s ‘Proposal Run’ route backwards it spells out “Bart Yasso is the Devil!”

Cary is member RIF #201 in Run It Fast – The Club.

Lance Armstrong Was Fired Today, Several Times Over!

Lance Armstrong Was Fired Today, Several Times Over!

Lance Armstrong had a very bad day. He was given the pink slip nearly half a dozen times TODAY!

The day started with news that Armstrong was stepping down as the chairman of Livestrong, the charity he created in the wake of his cancer survival and Tour de France success, to raise money to fight cancer.

“This organization, its mission and its supporters are incredibly dear to my heart,” the cancer survivor said in a statement. “Today therefore, to spare the foundation any negative effects as a result of controversy surrounding my cycling career, I will conclude my chairmanship.”

The Livestrong news came as a package deal with the major announcement from Nike that they were terminating their endorsement contract with Armstrong

“Due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade, it is with great sadness that we have terminated our contract with him,” the company said in a statement. “Nike does not condone the use of illegal performance-enhancing drugs in any manner. Nike plans to continue support of the Livestrong initiatives created to unite, inspire and empower people affected by cancer.”

After that the endorsement dominoes fell one after another starting with Anheuser-Busch announcing they wouldn’t renew their deal with Armstrong.

“We will not renew our relationship with Lance Armstrong when current contract expires”

This was followed by Trek, Giro Helmets, Honey Stinger, and 24 Hour Fitness all announcing they were severing ties with the troubled cyclist.

The sponsors are all jumping ship in wake of the insurmountable pile of evidence that Armstrong doped and cheating in winning his seven Tour de France championships.

Christopher Hesch – Runner – Los Angeles

Elite Runner Christian Hesch Admits to EPO Doping

Elite road-runner Christian Hesch has admitted to EPO blood doping after being confronted by several of his Nike Team Run L.A. teammates who found an empty vial in his stuff.

Hesch, a self-described “profligate road racer,” said that over two years, beginning in August 2010, he injected himself with EPO 54 times before an empty EPO vial was found in his bag and he was reported to antidoping officials. In that time, he won nearly $40,000 in prize money in more than 75 races, including international competitions, United States championships and local road races.

Hesch, 33, gained national fame earlier this year when he out ran Ethiopia’s Fikadu Lemma and Demesse Tefera at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Providence Half Marathon to win with a time of 1:07:05.

Two days prior Hesch had run a 4:00.01 mile at the GNC Live Well Liberty Mile in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

The USADA has a case pending against Hesch and has ordered that he not race until they decide how to punish him. (USADA has been a bit busy with it’s loaded case against cyclist Lance Armstrong over the past few weeks).

“It would be fairly expensive if I wanted to fight it,” Hesch said. “Usada only brings cases when they’re pretty sure, and this is coming from a guy with a pending case.”

Hesch could face a 2-year ban from the USADA.

Competitor’s Mario Fraioli felt miffed and misled by Hesch giving his story to the New York Times when he had been working with Hesch for days about an exclusive for Competitor Magazine (full story).

Fraioli ran the piece (see below) last night after getting word that the NYT was about to publish it’s exclusive piece on Hesch.

Hesch’s public apology piece that Fraioli had been waiting on, and was published last night, titled ‘Christian Hesch Publicly Apologizes for Doping‘ can be read HERE.

“I will promise you that when I return to racing if you yell “doper” or “you suck” at me as I pass by, I will not flip you the bird, nor will I throw a sarcastic thumbs-up. I might wave though, and I’ll be happy to hear you out after the race, no matter how rough the content. As Tyler Hamilton said so well, “I’m an ex-doper, and I don’t suck.” I hope you’ll feel the same way about me after sharing a word, a race, or a beer with me. I look forward to seeing you all on the roads, next year.”

What are your thoughts on Hesch’s confession?  Do you really think he’s sincere in his apology or just sorry he got caught?  Have you ever suspected one of your racing peers was doping?

Joshua Holmes – Bum Knee – Yellowstone-Teton 100

Yellowstone-Teton 100 Miler Race Report (2012) – Joshua Holmes

RIF #1 Joshua Holmes at Yellowstone-Teton 100

Yellowstone-Teton 100 Mile Race Report

Intro: I wanted to do a road 100 miler with cooler temps in or around October. After searching Ultrasignup I came across the Yellowstone-Teton 100 Miler. There was not much info on the interwebs about it since it was an inaugural event last year, but I wanted to run it anyway. I went in with almost no expectations except that it would be cooler than most races I have done the past year.  Temps turned out to be much cooler to put it mildly extremely.

So here is a breakdown of the 2012 Yellowstone-Teton 100 Miler:

Weapons: Hoka One One – Evo Tarmac (45 miles) and Hoka One One – Stinson B Combo Hybrid (55 miles)

Course: Point-to-Point – Starts in West Yellowstone, Montana and finishes in Driggs, Idaho.  The course winds through the town of West Yellowstone before heading down the Hwy 20 towards Idaho Falls. At mile 37 runners take a left off of the semi-busy highway onto Scenic Mesa Falls By-Way with a wide open view of the Grand Teton Mountain range for most of the way.  At mile 67.5 the course turns to gravel. The sun had just gone down as I found this part of the course. The road had some bumps and indentions that made it tough with a headlamp to see accurately.  It wasn’t bad but after being on paved road for the first 67 miles it took some time to adjust to.  The course returns to a nice asphalt road at mile 70.9 when we took a left onto Hwy 32.  The road was smooth and good running until hitting a gravel road again at mile 92.7 when we turned right onto N. 2000.  The gravel road during this part seemed packed better or else I just didn’t care at this point. At mile 97.5 we turned right on Hwy 33 towards Driggs and it was a straight shot to the Dreamchaser’s store in Driggs for the finish.  OVERALL – Fair and fast course even with extremely cold temps. No obstacles to worry about outside of highway traffic during the first 37 miles. There were a handful of decent climbs in the race from miles 8-10, 56-60, and around 80-87.

Elevation: 5,394 ft gain, 5,899 ft loss.  Minimum Elevation 5,316 ft Maximum Elevation 7,092 ft

Organization: The race was extremely well organized. Race director Lisa Smith-Batchen and her husband Jay did a great job of marking the course, making it easy to pick up bib/race packets whether it be in Driggs, Idaho at Dreamchasers or at the hotel in West Yellowstone, Montana at the pre-race meeting the night before the race.  The aid stations were good but not great. It didn’t matter too much as most of the runners had crews.  I wanted hot soup when it became dark and cold again but half of the aid stations didn’t have any or the soup was cold at the one aid station later in the race that had some.  The volunteers at the aid stations were great and made sure I was ok and if I needed anything. RD Lisa was amazing as she drove the course checking on us runners at several points. She was very positive and enthusiastic towards us which was worth a boost of energy.

Weather:  It was brutally cold for this Tennessee/SoCal boy. It was 9 degrees at the start. My handheld froze up 3 miles into the race and all of my hair was white with frost during the early miles.  I had to ditch the handheld and just drink water when I’d see my crew. The weather did gradually warm when the sun finally came up. Temps rose to the mid to high 40’s in the late afternoon which made for very comfortable running.  However when the sun went back down that evening temps dropped once again to the low teens with some cold spots dipping into single digits briefly. It was cold but once layered up it wasn’t that bad. I’m for sure a warm weather runner, but I enjoyed the challenge of running in the opposite extreme.

Food: Tangerines (10), Double Stuf Oreos (22), Vespa (4), Roctane (25), Cups of Soup (4), Cheesy Hamburger Bun (1), Boiled Potato (1), Gummy Bears (147)

Drink: Water and Nuun (Lemon Tea)

Handicaps: My crew…I joke. I injured/tore something in my knee around mile 30. By mile 42 it was very painful. I tried a knee strap, but it didn’t seem to help much. I knew I’d have to DNF or quit with 58 miles remaining unless something changed.  I felt like my knee was hanging on by a thread. I was at peace with the possibility of having to accept my first DNF and quit the race.  In a last ditch attempt I put on a tight knee compression sleeve and rolled it up and down to where there was a lot of pressure on the part of the knee that was hurting. I also changed my shoes at this point to hopefully change my landing spot a bit.  It wasn’t a magic or perfect fix but it did seem to make the pain more manageable.  The knee also seemed to heal or regenerate a bit when I’d walk in between my running. Sometime during this I sprained my right ankle. It was not a bad sprain and probably occurred from overcompensating from my left knee.  It eventually faded away.  Once I made it to mile 50 I started to feel like I would finish the race and eventually I did.  Since the race my knee has definitely felt like something is torn in it. I can walk with no pain but occasionally a certain step or going up a stair causes intense pain in the knee.

Crew: RIF #5 Lisa Gonzales graciously agreed to crew me for the Yellowstone-Teton 100. With aid stations at the race being sparse and far apart I thought it was vital to have a crew to help me perform at my best.  I had only used a crew twice before, both times during The Last Annual Vol State 500K.  Lisa was very nervous early on in the race. I tried to reassure her that she was doing a good job, to relax and enjoy the day. She relaxed as the day went on and quickly picked up on what I’d want or need when I’d come upon her on the course.  It was great to have her company throughout the race and weekend. She for sure helped me perform at a very high level for the #YT100.  I’m very thankful for her help.

Hardware: Beautiful finisher’s belt buckle that has a large ‘Y’ and ‘T’ separated with an engraved bison with the phrase ‘Running With the Buffaloes – 100 Miler’ beneath it on an arrowhead shaped buckle. One of the more beautiful buckle’s I’ve received to date.

I finished first in the 30-39 male age division and received a hand painted tile of snow capped mountains and trees by a local artist. My finishing time was 21:23:55.

Splits: Mary-4:20, 30-5:10, 50K-5:20, 40-7:14, 50-9:25, 60-11:38, 100k-12:06, 70-14:00, 80-16:30, 90-18:53 = 100mi-21:23:55

Summation: A wonderful 100 miler that I would do again.  Not many races of any distance will be more scenic.  Dreamchaser does a great job putting the race on and making sure all runners are as comfortable as possible for 100 miles.  It helps to be crewed here but with added water stops this year it’s very doable without a crew. Congrats to Lisa on putting on a truly great race.
