Mike Morton and Ellie Greenwood Named Ultrarunners of the Year

UltraRunning magazine has named Mike Morton and Ellie Greenwood as it’s ‘Ultrarunners of the Year’ according to the magazine’s website.

Morton won five races in 2012 including some amazing performances at the Badwater 135 (2 minutes off course record), Umstead 100 Miler (course record), Florida Keys 100 (course record), and IAU 24-Hour where he put down 172.457 miles in 24-hours (an American record).

Greenwood, who has resided in Canada over the past decade, repeated as the female ‘Ultrarunner of the Year.’  Ellie won the Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run where she broke the female course record.  She won a total of eight ultramarathons in 2012 including a smashing course record at the JFK 50 Miler back in November.

American River 50 Mile Endurance Run Logo

Vajin Armstrong Wins American River 50 Mile Endurance Run (Results)

Vajin Armstrong won the American River 50 Mile Endurance Race on April 7, 2012 with a time of 5:53:14.

Rich Hanna was a relatively close second place finisher in 6:05:32. Third place went to Jacob Rydman in 6:10:09.

First overall female finisher was Ellie Greenwood (6:18:29) who was the 5th overall finisher as well.  She destroyed her competition with a winning margin of over an hour.

Jenny Hitchings claimed second place (7:21:24) and Ashley Laird took home third (7:24:48).

Kilian Jornet Western States 100 Mile Winner 2011

Spain’s Kilian Jornet Wins 2011 Western States 100 Endurance Run

Kilian Jornet is the overall winner of the 2011 Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run.

He ran the 100 mile course, the Boston Marathon of 100-mile ultra marathons, in a time of 15:34.

Jornet is from Puigcerda, Spain.  He is the youngest male to ever win the race according to a tweet from ultra marathon god Scott Jurek.

Reports are surfacing that 2nd place female finisher Kami Semick was delayed 7 minutes by a mad mama bear. She waited for runners behind her to catch her. They then passed the pissed bear as a group.
