Run It Fast’s Extreme Racer Standings (thru November 2015)

John Leighton Winter Run - Run It Fast

The conclusion of November brought the Run It Fast – Extreme Racer standings into an extremely tight competition as the top three overall were separated by less than 42 points with John Leighton leading the way with 1,458.67. Following closely in 2nd was George Southgate with 1,427.1 points and in Joshua Holmes in 3rd place with 1,417.5 points.

When we look at the women’s side we have a new leader as well as Arkansas native Teal Clark takes over the pole position with 1,124.1 points. Diane Bolton, last year’s Extreme Racer top female, moves into 2nd place with 1,077.06 points. Patricia Klein drops to third with a staggering 1,069.4 points to round out an extremely competitive leaderboard amongst the women.

With one month to go…actually just a couple more weeks left in the year…it will be interesting to see who can knock off more race miles while finishing their races. DNF miles do not count towards ER points. Will John and Teal be able to hold on to their top spots or will George, Diane, or Patricia be able to over take them? We will know soon enough.

Thank you to all RIF members who have submitted race points throughout the year.

Run It Fast’s Extreme Racer Standings (thru September 2015)

Joshua Holmes at Born to Run, photo by Joel Livesey - Run It Fast

It’s hard to believe how fast 2015 has flown by. We are looking towards the end of the year, and the last few months in the Extreme Racer competition for 2015. Even though there are only 3 months left to accrue race points, this time of year brings some of my favorite races, at least in this corner of the world. The Harpeth Hills Flying Monkey Marathon, Tunnel Hill 100/50 miler, and RIF’s own Black Diamond 40 miler, Double Black Diamond 40 miler, and Sequoyah series are all taking place in November and each will be a reunion of sorts for many RIF members who plan to attend.

Founder and RIF #1 Joshua Holmes is still in the lead with 1350.8 points. Only 81.7 points behind is RIF #387 Steven Smith with 1269.1 points. Taking third place is RIF #190 John Kent Leighton with 1207.17 points.

The top women seem to be continuously shaking things up. RIF #450 Patricia Klein has taken over first place with 965.7 points. Coming in second place is RIF #473 Teal Clark with 869 points. And in third place is Canadian RIF #410 Marylou Corino with 781.5 points.

Steven Smith – Silverton Challenge 2015 – Run It Fast

Run It Fast’s Extreme Racer Standings (thru August 2015)

Steven Smith - Silverton Challenge 2015 - Run It Fast

Finally, we are beginning to see some cooler temperatures blowing in. Summer is slipping away and Autumn is making its appearance. Autumn is my favorite season. It brings with it not only cooler weather, but beautiful colors, warm flavors, crisp air, fun holidays and great races, too. And there are only a few months left in the year to accrue race miles and battle for the top spot in the Extreme Racer competition.

Having recently finished the Wasatch 100 and successfully attaining a victory in the “Slamwater” challenge (a combination of the Grand Slam of 100’s and Badwater 135 in the same summer), Run It Fast’s founder and leader RIF #1 Joshua Holmes is leading the men with 1250.8 points. However, RIF #387 Steven Smith is hot on his heels in second place with 1238.1 points after winning the Silverton Challenge 6-Day, only a 12.7 point difference. RIF #279 George Southgate takes third place with 1055 points.

RIF #473 Teal Clark has taken over the first place spot in our women’s leaderboard with 761.8 points. Only 2 points behind, RIF #287 Carol Earles takes second place with 759.8 points. And RIF #410 Marylou Corino takes third place with 731.5 points, only 28.3 points behind Carol.

Run It Fast’s Extreme Racer Standings (thru July 2015)

IMG_2427

July was a busy and exciting month for many Run It Fast members, as it hosts both the Last Annual Vol State 500k and Badwater 135. These two races helped several RIF members to rake in the race miles, which has no doubt given us quite a shake-up in the standings for the Extreme Racer competition.

Somehow, our top 3 men managed to hang on to their spots. Leading the way, is RIF #1 Joshua Holmes with 1150.8 points. Second place is held by RIF #279 George Southgate with 974 points. Coming in third place is RIF #190 John Kent Leighton with 897.67 points.

We have had a change in our leading females, as Canadian record holder and 2015 finisher of the Vol State 500k, RIF #410 Marylou Corino has taken over first place with 731.5 points. Here are a few numbers to wrap your mind around:
In 2015, 11 Run It Fast members finished the Last Annual Vol State 500k, meaning that RIF covered 3,454 miles at one race, in one year. Just from what I can tell at taking a quick look, it looks as though RIF members from 2011 to present have finished LAVS 31 times. That is 10,048 miles on one course. That does not count the miles covered up to a DNF, and I’m sure there are probably a few finishes that I missed in counting. Still, that number is the equivalent of running from the east coast to the west coast roughly 3.14 times. That is a lot of miles and extremely impressive.

This group of extraordinary people continues to awe me on a daily basis. No matter where you are or what kind of running you’re doing, you are making a difference and there is always someone watching. Someone you are inspiring to get up, get out, and get active. We are all changing peoples lives, even if we don’t realize it.

Happy running!

Spring has sprung, and runners are starting to come out of their burrows. No matter where you call home, runners and walkers alike are covering roads and sidewalks in their running shoes with their friends, pets and strollers in tow, enjoying the warm sunshine and doing their best to shed a few winter pounds. Whether you are an indoor winter runner or a year-round outdoor vet, race mileage is beginning to accrue and, with it, points. Extreme Racer points, that is.

With Run It Fast’s continual growth of new members, the Extreme Racer competition already has many new competitors than last year, and I enjoy seeing how the change in competition shakes up the standings. Congratulations to our winners and all of those that placed in the top 10, to those who hit their mileage goals for the year, completed a new distance or ran a PR this year! Remember, it’s not really about how many miles you run or how fast you run them. It’s about the enjoyment of the sport and making so many new friends along the way.

Another year has come and gone, and many miles were shared with friends or tread with quiet solitude. We cannot count the number of laughs or painful tears shed, the number of toenails lost, gels eaten or swear words spit out in a fit of exhaustion and frustration, so we count the distance instead, which is a mild representation of the journey we have traveled.

Many do not understand our masochism or the amount of soul-searching, gut-wrenching determination and heart that goes into the art of distance running. But as fellow runners, we can all appreciate and understand someone’s pain and suffering, joy and victory that is represented by the label of their yearly mileage.

So as the year comes to a close, let’s take a moment to celebrate those who have both suffered and celebrated the most this year.

As an added bonus, here are some stats to wrap your mind around:

  • The RIF men participating in the Extreme Racer competition raced a total of 18,000.28 miles in 2014.
  • The RIF women participating in the Extreme Racer competition raced a total of 11,043.64 miles in 2014.
  • That makes a total of 29,043.93 miles raced by RIF members in 2014, but ONLY those who entered their race miles for the year.
  • Only 52 RIF members entered their yearly race miles for 2014 and RIF now has over 400 members.
  • Assuming these numbers are a good representation of RIF in it’s entirety, that would be about 232,351.44 miles RACED by RIF members in one year.
  • That’s a little over 9 times around the Earth’s equator.
  • I wonder what the number would be if we counted training miles, too.

That’s a lot of mileage. You guys are so amazing and inspiring. What an honor to be a part of such an incredible group!

Ed Jester Ettinghausen 100 Mile Record Run It Fast

Ed’ The Jester’ Ettinghausen Breaks Record for Most 100 Milers in a Year

Ed Jester Ettinghausen 100 Mile Record Run It Fast

Ed Ettinghausen, known in most circles at ‘The Jester,’ tonight set the World Record for Most 100 Milers in a calendar year with his 37th of 2014. He broke the old record held by the great Liz Bauer who had accumulated 36 of them back in 2012.

The record tying and record breaking runs took place in Bonita, California at a small event titled aptly Jester’s World Record Run. He finished #37 with a time of 36 hours 17 minutes.

Finisher’s of JWRR received a belt buckle with, you guessed it, the Jester’s face on it.

The Jester still has plans to run three more 100 milers in 2014 to finish the year with 40.

Congrats to Ed and his wife Martha (super crew) on this impressive accomplishment.

Run It Fast’s Extreme Racer Standings (October 2014)

Run It Fast’s Extreme Racer Standings (October 2014)

BLU 100 - Ed Ettinghausen and Joshua Holmes - Beyond Limits Ultra 100 - 2013

We are down to two months left in 2014. It is crazy how fast time goes by. Especially when you’re having fun! And what’s more fun than racing, right?

I love watching the race points accrue each month and seeing how the lineup changes. We have had a bit of a shake-up in the top male leaderboard. Holding on to first place, of course, is RIF #121 Ed Ettinghausen. Ed “The Jester”, after updating his points and tacking on an extra almost 1000 points, comes in at 3463.8 points for the year through October. Holding on to second place is RIF #1 Joshua Holmes with 1305.3 points. However, RIF #190 John Kent Leighton has taken over third place with 1182.9 points. Way to go, John!

The ladies are all holding on to their spots, for the time being. In first place with 1212.56 points is RIF #159 Diane Bolton. Coming in at  a close second is RIF #323 Jennifer Hatcher with 1026.9 points. Also close behind in third place is RIF #287 Carol Earles with 867.3 points. I will be interested to see where each of these ladies stand at the end of November.

Even though there are only two months left in the year, there are still a lot of great races where you can rack up on points. I know several RIF members dominated at Tunnel Hill 100/50 miler this weekend, and other races coming up like Run It Fast’s own Black Diamond, Double Black Diamond, and Sequoyah at the end of this month. Anything can happen.

Whatever you do, keep running, keep racing and keep inspiring others.
